Captain Nog, you made all of us proud. God speed. Aron and Renée's deaths are a tragedy, but I am forever grateful to have seen them perform and bring their respective customers to life in ways no one else ever could have. It's a shame they never got to film season 8.

Its a sin of Star Trek not to let us know what happened to Garak and Cardassia after so many years. We demand closure ! :D

Garek's reasoning is sound. Countless lives would have been saved (by the sacrifice of their own) if they had just glassed the planet. Is it genocide if the murder of 15,000 combatants (wiping out a species) saves 100,000+ more sentient lives? It makes for a very interesting ethical debate.

1:29 So far, Sisko found out that Nog is a hard worker and he's honest. But, if he lets Nog attend the academy, he might try to bribe his way up the ranks. He is a ferangi after. It wasn't until Nog broke down and told Sisko his true motives, that he was given a chance. I love ds9.

Biggest misconception in history is assumption Oppressors are worst and oppressed are sincere. Truth is we know Nothing of Bajoran society in history, 1st attempt re-kindle it's original caste based societal underpinning; a guy murdered a man just because he was part different societal branch.......in span of a day. the Occupation lasted 50 years, and 15 million died. That's an average 300,000 occupation related deaths ON all of Bajor a population of 3.8 Billion. Occupation related death of 1 out of 12,000. That's farely low. Cardassians tightly controlled the Bajoran economy. Leaving would have completely disrupted it, resulting in vacuums of capital, collapsed supply chains, and temporary but severe depression. If Cardassians are in charge of distributing food, and the Cardassians suddenly leave along with all their equipment, who distributes food? It takes awhile to figure it out. A similar thing happened to Russia following the end of the Soviet-era controlled economy. After the fall of communism, Russian GDP went into a tailspin for several years. It's exactly what you'd expect to happen following such a dramatic and sudden shift in planetary governance. In fact, it was probably inevitable. By contrast Earth' 2nd World war killed 60-100 million in 6 years.

1:30 This scene is Nog's pivot from being Jake's hard luck friend to becoming a full rounded character of his own. But it also is alot about his father, Rom. Rom, who didn't have a name other than "Ferengi Pitt Boss" in the pilot script, being summed up by his son. Great engineer, but not a savvy businessman. Quark in a subsequent episode described how Rom was basically blind to what Nog's mother was as a person. Rom was so fixated on being a good family man... he let his father-in-law exploit him when he signed a marriage contract extension with Nog's mother. She & her father cleaned him out... then she left him with Nog, basically begging Quark for a waiter's job. Rom basically thru 3 seasons looked like his self-confidence was destroyed. Rom was even understanding of Nog's Starfleet plans. Quark whined that Nog was going to undermine Ferengi society. Rom dismissed that claim... he said Nog just wanted a job with better hours. Ironically, I think the writers deciding to develop Rom's character into more than a punchline probably started after Nog's speech here. Nog's ambition to make something of himself... instead of being like mirror universe Nog & take over Quarks bar [before being the token Ferengi murder victim each visit to the mirror universe yielded]... ...seemed to fuel Rom's desire to be more than Quark's "Waylon Smithers"... ...and even inspired him to date for the 1st time since his divorce.

People seem to forget that Garak actively practises lies and rhetoric, and constantly toys with people to keep his mind sharp. It’s doubtful that he actually believes in the occupation, especially considering we know he was exiled from Cardassia in the aftermath of it. It’s never stated what happened, but I believe the implication from his character is that he is a believer in the idea of Cardassia as it claims to be, but doesn’t accept when Cardassians want to do things that aren’t aligned to idealised Cardassia values. They are still alien values that we wouldn’t agree with, but he’s not a supervillain who believes “anything is good so long as the Central Command benefits from it.” He’s like Worf in that respect. Worf is the ideal, true Klingon who believes in real (not expedient and political) honour, and that costed him his place in the Empire until the end of DS9. Garak, too, likely lost his place in the Union because he believes in whatever the true values of Cardassia are..

One thing I loved about the 3 Ferengi characters, they all felt so inconsequential in the beginning. Just like every other Ferengi. But by the end of the series, Nog is on his way to being a titan in Starfleet, and gets a ship named after him in the distant future. His father finally found a good wife and became Grand Negus and is responsible for the Ferengi joining the Federation. And, Quark is one of the biggest business leaders in the Alpha quadrant. They weren't just any Ferengi, they were the best Ferengi. That whole family, no wonder Zek couldn't resist his mother.

When I saw this episode and they were reviewing the inventory, I was waiting for the coin to drop. When do we find out Nog cheated the inventory somehow? What kind of trick did he use? And then the moment passed and the coin was still being held. And I couldn't help but stare as I was watching yet another character who was becoming more than we've known them to be. The comments have kind of spoiled it for me. That's my fault. But I love seeing what Nog becomes. I can't wait to meet future him as I continue to binge DS9

Television and movies show so many dysfunctional father son relationships. Yet, because of that we see how important that relationship is. No matter how warped a writer's perception might be, their preoccupation with and longing for a healthy version of that relationship shows how fundamental it really is to human experience.
